Stockholm only recently (2004) began marketing toward being a location for international meetings. Now, the city receives twice as many business arrivals as leisure arrivals. The average length of stay for a leisure tourist is 2.1 nights (with lengthier stays in camping sites or on luxury boats). A business traveler, however, spends on average 4 nights in the city. Stockholm ranks as the 8th in the world for International Congress locations (leading in Scandinavia). Thus, in more recent years, regional marketing has focuses more on the affordability and availability of hotels and conference centers in Stockholm for business tourism.
Leisure tourism, however, still majorly and positively impacts the economy of Stockholm. The peak season for leisure tourists is May to September. Overall visitor growth for the city may be likewise contributed to cruise boat stopover. A new terminal was recently built on the shore, and the number of visitors has doubled overall in the past 5 years because of the construction.
Many regional festivals keep leisure tourism lively as well, as Stockholm gains recognition as a trendier, younger location.
